As this is when osteogenesis occurs.
Morning sickness and increased sensitivity to smell may affect comfort during visits too.

Second Trimester
Why might pregnant pts experience inflamed gums / increased bleeding during procedures?
Due to an increase in blood volume.
Which two medications should be AVOIDED in pregnancy?
Tricyclines and Metronidazole

What is a pregnancy granuloma?
A benign overgrowth of gingival tissue and capillaries.

Interdental papilla on the labial surface.
When are pregnancy granulomas most likely to occur?
During the THIRD TRIMESTER

- Decrease in pH.
- Decreased sodium concentration.

What is recommended in terms of radiographs in pregnant patients?
Minimise exposure to radiation and only take essential radiographs.
Which type of local anaesthetic is generally safe during pregnancy?
Lidocaine
How should a pregnant patient be positioned in the dental chair?
In a semi-reclined position.
Why should pregnant patients be put in a semi-reclined position?
To avoid compression of the inferior vena cava if they are lied back.
What would happen if compression of the inferior vena cava occurred?
Reduced blood flow and potential hypotension/dizziness.
