Components of Principle 1:
put pts interests first
1.1 - listen to pts.
1.2 - treat pts with dignity and respect.
1.3 - be honest and act with integrity.
1.4 - take a holistic and preventative approach to pt care which is appropriate to the individual.
1.5 - treat pts in a hygienic and safe environment.
1.6 - treat pts fairly, as individuals without discrimination.
1.7 - put pts interests before your own/colleagues/organisation.
1.8 - have appropriate arrangements in place for pts to seek compensation if they have suffered harm.
1.9 - find out and follow regulations which affect your work.

communicate effectively with pts
2.1 - listen, give time for consideration and take into account views of pts.
2.2 - promote pt rights and responsabilities for making decisions about their health.
2.3 - give information in a way they can understand so they can make informed decisions.
2.4 - give clear information about costs.
Components of Principle 3:
obtain valid consent
3.1 - obtain valid consent before starting treatment, explaining all the relevant options and costs.
3.2 - make sure pts understand the decisions they are being asked to make.
3.3 - make sure consent remains valid at each stage of investigation/treatment.
Components of Principle 4:
maintain and protect pt information
4.1 - keep contemporaneous, complete and accurate pt records.
4.2 - protect confidentiality and only use info for intended purpose.
4.3 - only release pt information without their permission in exceptional circumstances.
4.4 - ensure pts can have access to their records.
4.5 - keep pts information secure at all times.
Components of Principle 5:
have a clear and effective complaints procedure
5.1 - ensure there is an effective complaints procedure readily available.
5.2 - respect a pts right to complain.
5.3 - give a prompt and constructive response to pts who complain.
Components of Principle 6:
work with colleagues in a way that is in pts best interest
6.1 - work effectively with colleagues and contribute to good teamwork.
6.2 - you must be appropriately supported when treating pts.
6.3 - delegate and refer appropriately.
6.4 - only accept a referral/delegation if you are trained and competent to carry out the treatment.
6.5 - communicate clearly and effectively with other team members within pt interests.
6.6 - demonstrate effective management and leadership skills if you manage a team.

Maintain, develop and work within your professional knowledge and skills.
7.1 - provide care based on current evidence and authoritative guidance.
7.2 - work within your knowledge, skills and competence.
7.3 - update and develop professional knowledge and skills throughout your working life.
Components of Principle 8:
raise concerns if pt are at risk
8.1 - always put pt safety first.
8.2 - act promptly if pts or colleagues are at risk and take measures to protect them.
8.3 - encourage and support a culture where staff can raise concerns openly and without fear of reprisal.
8.4 - make sure there is a procedure in place for raising concerns which is readily available.
8.5 - take appropriate action if you have concerns about abuse.

ensure personal behaviour maintains patients’ confidence in you and the dental profession
9.1 - ensure your conduct justifies pt trust in you and the profession
9.2 - protect pts/colleagues from risks posed by your health, conduct or performance.
9.3 - inform the GDC if you are subject to criminal proceedings.
9.4 - cooperate with any formal or informal enquiry with truthful information.
