Pregnancy Flashcards
1
Q
Functions of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG)
A
- Maintains corpus luteum
- Stimulates conversion of maternal LDL to progesterone in placenta
- Regulates development of fetal adrenal glands & gonads in 1st trimester
- Prevents fetal rejection
2
Q
Functions of progesterone (pro-gestation)
A
- Inhibits prostaglandins thus reducing uterine contractility
- Inhibits FSH thus inhibiting ovulation
- Stimulates secretion of endometrial glands
- Prevents fetal rejection
3
Q
Effects of human chorionic somato-mammo-tropin (hCS)
A
- Hyperinsulinemia
- Peripheral insulin resistance –> increase in blood glucose
- Decreases maternal utilization of glucose –> increases availability of glucose for fetus
