Define: Probiotics
live microorganism that confer health benefit to the host
Define: Prebiotic
selectively fermented ingredient that results in specific changes in the composition and/or activity of the gastrointestinal microbiota
Define: Symbiotics
products that contain both probiotic and prebiotics
What do probiotics do?
bacteria of the microbiota in the intestines help digest food, destroy disease-causing microorganisms, and produce vitamins, so they can assist on maintaining a desirable community of microorganisms
What are common components of probiotics?
microorganism= lactobacillus (L.), Bifidobacterium (B.), and yeast (saccharomyces boulardii)
What products contain probiotics?
supplements, yogurt, kefir, saurerkraut, kimchi, tempeh or miso, pickles, kombucha
What are common components of prebiotics?
-oligosaccharides (GOS & FOS), oligofructose (OF), chicory fiber, inulin, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)
What foods contain prebiotics?
asparagus, garlic, leek, onion, artichoke, bananas, dandelion root, whole grains
When collecting information from patients, what should you ask before recommending a probiotic/prebiotic?
-current diet (what do they already have?)
-bowel movements
-food or supplement preference?
-price
-ability to refrigerate
-are they excluded from taking this medication?
-current medications
What patients are considered excluded from taking probiotics?
due to the risk of serious infections patients that are critically ill, post surgery, very sick infants, and severely weakened immune systems should not take probiotics
What digestive disorders that can be treated with probiotics?
diarrhea caused by infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease
Who should be recommended probiotics?
patients with digestive disorders, allergic disorders, tooth decay and other oral health problems, colic in infants, liver disease, prevention and treatment of respiratory infections
What is the goal of treating patients with probiotics?
-help maintain a desirable community of microorganisms
-stabilize the digestive tract’s barrier
-help the community of microorganisms be returned to normal
-outcompete undesirable microorganisms
-stimulate immune response
What are the patient education points of probiotics?
-storage
