What causes heat rash?
blockage within the eccrine sweat duct- caused by sweating
What are the risk factors for heat rash?
-hot and humid environments
-occlusion of the skin such as clothing or bandages
-medications such as isotretinoin or chemotherapy
What are the signs and symptoms of heat rash?
erythematous 2-4mm papules (pinpoint red raised lesions) may be associated with itching or stinging
What are the exclusions for self care for heat rash?
same as diaper rash
What are the treatment goals for heat rash?
-eliminating occlusion of skin
-protecting skin from further irritation
-promote healing of skin
-discouraging onset of secondary infection
What products can be used for heat rash?
moisturizing lotions, creams with hydrocortisone, diphenhydramine, dimethicone, ect.
What is the nonpharmacological treatment for heat rash?
remove aggravating factors, gentle exfoliation with a rough cloth during bathing
