What are the causes for diaper rash?
-excessive moisture (liquid or solid waste occluded by diaper)
-friction
-increased pH
-high enzymatic activity
-diet
-antibiotic use
What are the exclusions for self care for diaper rash?
-lesions > 7 days or not improved in 7 days despite appropriate treatment
-complicated by secondary infection
-lesions caused by another disease state
-presence outside of diaper region
-possible UTI or disfigurement of private area
-presence of broken skin
-onion skin appearance or bulla formation
-chronic or frequent recurrent lesion
-signs of abuse
-significant behavioral changes
-cormid conditions
What are the treatment goals for diaper rash?
-relieve symptoms
-rid the patient of the rash
-prevent secondary infection
-prevent recurrence
Describe the ABCDE for preventing diaper rash
-A= AIR “diaper holiday”
-B= BARRIER using paste or ointments containing petrolatum, zinc oxide, lanolin, dimethicone
-C= CLEANING with warm water and soft cloth and pat dry
-D= DIAPER type and frequent changing
-E= EDUCATION
