Pre-surgical patient prep. Flashcards
What steps should be taken prior to sx?
-Bath/capstar
-Double check RED collar
-Triple check ID and procedure
-Consent form signed
-Start anesthesia form
How does the assistant assist in surgery?
holding tissue out of the way, elevating the ovarian pedicle, getting instruments ready, etc.
Before the patient leaves the recovery area, the surgeon is responsible for
writing a very brief surgery report to note areas of difficulty or complications encountered during the procedure
_ _ can lead to skin irritation or infection and prolong the healing process. It will also increase the likelihood that the animal will lick the surgical area
Clipper burn
What should be done prior to clipping the fur
blades check for chipped or missing teeth, rust, should be sharp
What should be done while clipping the fur
intermittently check for over-heating during the process of clipping
When is hair removal done
at induction, before the animal is moved to the sx table
First clip hair along what direction
same direction of hair growth, then again against the direction of hair growth
Hair is clipped in an area extending at least _ _ _ widths in every direction from the planned incision
2 clipper blade
Loose hair is thoroughly removed with a _ or _ _before transferring patient from induction area to a sx table
vacuum or lint roller
Clip after patient has been _ under anesthesia
stabilized
What should be worn during fur clipping
lab coat
Hold clippers in _ grip
pencil
What are the steps of a thorough skin prep?
-Scrub with chlorhexidine scrub from prep tray
-Rinse with water containing dilute chlorhexidine solution (pale blue)
-Repeat both steps 3 times AFTER all gross debris moved
-Begin each scrub in center and scrub in a “bulls eye” pattern toward the periphery
-Final skin prep done after patient moved to sx table
-The final application of Iodine or Chlorhexidine solution allow to remain on skin “the paint”
-After skin prep, secure legs and adjust lighting
What position is a patient in for abdominal surgery
dorsal recumbency with head toward anesthetic machine and resting comfortably on table
Warming devices should be placed under a _ and should NEVER
towel; be placed in direct contact with patient
In large, deep chested dogs, it may help to
cross forelimbs, securing each tie down to opposite side of the table
After removing excess fur if doing an abdominal sx (like a spay) what should be done?
express bladder
In a canine spay, where will the incision be?
in the cranial 1/3 of the abdomen, just caudal to the umbilicus
In a feline spay, where will the incision be made?
in the middle 1/3 of the abdomen
What are the cranial and caudal landmarks for hair removal in a canine and feline spay?
xiphoid to the pubis
When clipping the fur for a canine castration, the testicles should be pushed _ to isolate the sx site.
cranially
When prepping for a canine neuter, care should be taken to avoid shaving the _
testicles
what should be done prior to clipping for a castration in a dog
prepuce flush
A - incision will be made for canine castration
pre-scrotal
For a feline castration, longer hair around the testicles will be clipped; however, the testicles will be _
plucked
for orthopedic sx, any hair remaining on the foot is covered with a
a glove loosely taped and the limb suspended
For orthopedic sx the surgical scrub begins at the edge of the tape from _ to _ and moving circumferentially around the limb
distal to proximal
What should be placed on the “down limb” in an orthopedic surgery
sterile towel
For tail and perianal sx, a - suture should be placed prior to prep; tie a string on your finger too!
purse-string
For tail and perianal sx, what area should be prepped last?
dirty area
