PRACTICE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
examination of tissues, secretions, and excretions of the human body and other body fluids by various procedures or techniques, manual or automated
Blood banking procedures and techniques
parasitic, mycologic, and microbiologic techniques
histopathologic and cytotechnologic procedures (a lab technician can perform the procedures)
clinical research involving human subjects with the use of medical technology procedures
preparation and standardization of reagents, standards, and stains for the use of the laboratory
clinical laboratory quality control
collection and preservation of specimens
Section 2 of RA 5527
• PRACTICE OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
A duly registered physician especially trained in the methods of laboratory medicine
PATHOLOGIST
Trained in the gross and microscopic study and interpretation of tissues, secretions, and excretions of the human body
PATHOLOGIST
Trained in body functions to diagnose disease, follow its course, determine the effectivity of treatment, ascertain the cause of death, and advance medicine by research
PATHOLOGIST
Head of laboratory
PATHOLOGIST
Counterchecks the work of the medical technologists
HEAD OF THE LABORATORY
Affixes signatures in every result form
HEAD OF THE LABORATORY
• Junior and senior
• A person who engages in the work of medical technology under the supervision of a pathologist or a licensed physician authorized by DOH
MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
• Front line of laboratory diagnostics
MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
• Process specimens and release results after the tests have been confirmed by the pathologist
MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
• Signature must always be affixed in every result form
MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIST
A person qualified to assist a medical technologist and/or a qualified pathologist in the practice of medical technology
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
Has failed the board examination for medical technologists but obtained a general rating of at least 70%
MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNICIAN
Someone trained to collect blood samples (skin puncture, venipuncture, arterial puncture)
• Part of the practice of medical technology in the Philippines
PHLEBOTOMISTS
In other countries: a specially trained person responsible for drawing blood samples from patients
PHLEBOTOMISTS
Examines human specimens to detect cancer cells or diseases
CYTOTECHNOLOGIST/CELL PROCESSOR
Examines smears of body fluids or tissues for abnormal changes in color, size, or shape (e.g. Papanicolaou smear)
CYTOTECHNOLOGIST/CELL PROCESSOR
• Abroad: 1-year, post-baccalaureate training program in a hospital
• In the Philippines: may also be performed by medical technologists assigned in the histopathology section of the laboratory
CYTOTECHNOLOGIST/CELL PROCESSOR
Routinely prepare, process, and stain biopsies and tissue specimens for microscopic examination by a pathologist
HISTOTECHNOLOGIST/TISSUE PROCESSOR
May also initiate or develop new procedures, evaluate QC data, or operate an electron microscope
HISTOTECHNOLOGIST/TISSUE PROCESSOR
Abroad: a 12-month training program has to be completed and passed
HISTOTECHNOLOGIST/TISSUE PROCESSOR
A medical technologist who has worked for a number of years in a specific discipline
SPECIALIST
May take an examination to demonstrate the expertise in the discipline (the Specialist in Blood Bank examination in the US)
SPECIALIST
• May have been stationed in a particular laboratory section for a long time
• May have taken and passed proficiency trainings conducted by the DOH
SPECIALIST
• Studies the structure of human chromosomes and their genetic content in relation to health and disease diagnosis (leukemia, tumors, birth defects)
CYTOGENETIC TECHNOLOGIST
• Must master the art of cell culture, chromosome banding and analysis, and photography and dark room skills
CYTOGENETIC TECHNOLOGIST
