Cultural Appropriation
A
“It’s a way of using another culture in a way that delights our imagination, while stripping that group of their identity”

Appropriation
A
- Involves one culture (dominant) using another culture’s (usually subordinate) articles/items without regard for the original meaning behind the articles/items
- Appropriation occurs frequently in the fashion industry
- Appropriation usually involves profiting (monetarily or otherwise) by the dominant group

- Khloe Kardashion with Afro and darker skin
- Kim Kardashion with box braids
- Victorias Secret Fashion show having models not it their cultures traditional outfits and making them sexier

A
- White performers in “blackface”—popular in 1800s
- Played characters that perpetuated a range of negative stereotypes about African Americans including being lazy, ignorant, superstitious, hyper sexual, criminal or cowardly
- Racist because portrays black individuals as “subordinates”

- The “Mammy,” an overweight and loud mother figure
- And “Zip Coon,” a flamboyant-dressed man who used sophisticated words incorrectly

- This outfit was meant to be representative of Thanksgiving, glamorizing the genocide of the indigenous people by European settlers and American colonists

- This is a photo of a white model from a Gucci runway show. The item being appropriated here is the turban or headdress that he is wearing
- This specific one is very similar to the Sikh-style turban. These are worn by the Sikh culture. They wear it as an article of faith that represents the meaning that all humans are sovereign, royal, and ultimately equal

Katy Perry has had several scandals involving cultural appropriation, as pictured below. She has chosen to dress like an Egyptian goddess, and as a Geisha, a traditional Japanese icon

Analysis of Bindis at Coachella
A
- Bindis are very elegant, vibrant jewels placed on the faces (typically above the eyes and symmetrical across the face) of women in different Indian cultures. In the Hindu culture, the bindi is used to represent the “third eye” that a person possesses. This “third eye” is considered the eye to look at God. It also represents a married woman
- You see many bindis at Coachella and different music festivals. It is considered part of the “boho chic” look

- The headwear comprises elements of Dunhuang frescoes, which is sacred for Chinese people and is relating to Buddhism, a religion rooted deeply in Chinese culture
- These pictures were taken in Paris Fashion Week shows a combination of eastern culture and western beauty. Nevertheless, the Chinese culture was appropriated by these costumes
