How many hours of sick leave do employees accrue?
4.0 hours of sick leave per pay period
Upon approval from the department, what are the (5) ways sick leave can be utilized?
- Illness or Injury - For illness or injury.
- Public Health Requirements - For public health requirements.
- Doctor Appointment - For a doctor’s appointment (max of 4 hours per appointment)
- Bereavement - For the death of an immediate family member (Option of using sick or other paid leave. Max of 48 hours of sick leave per death unless approved by the Sheriff/designee. May not exceed 240 hours)
- Medical Emergency - For medical emergencies of an immediate family member. (Option of using sick or up to 48 hours of vacation per fiscal year).
Under Article 10 - Sick Leave, how is immediate family defined?
“Immediate family shall be defined as spouse, parent, sibling, child, grandparent, grandchild (including legally adoptive relationships, current in-laws and step-relationships) or any of the previously mention specified relationships to the employee’s spouse, significant other or domestic partner. This shall also apply to legal guardianship/dependent situations.”
When an employee is on sick leave, what are the acceptable locations where the employee is allowed to be?
- Place of residence
- Medical facility
- Doctor’s office
NOTE: If the employee is not at one of the above locations, the employee SHALL notify their supervisor of their whereabouts.
According to Article 10 - Sick Leave, supervisors should monitor their employee’s sick leave and should document excessive sick leave as follows,
In a rolling calender year,
- 90 hours - supervisors shall document conversation in a Contact Report
- 100 hours - supervisors shall document this usage in a second Contact Report
- 110 hours - supervisors may open a SOC, after consulting with the Office of Labor Relations
NOTE: A Statement of Complaint will not be opened up unless the employee has received at least (2) Contact Reports.

To be eligible to request Catastrophic Leave the following criteria must be met,
- Employees must have a “catastrophic illness/injury” that keeps them from performing the duties of their job.
- The Catastrophic Leave Program is available to all collective bargaining unit employees who require a minimum of 80 hours leave after all accrued leaves have been exhausted.
- The employee must have graduated the academy and must be covered by the collective bargaining agreement.
- The “catastrophic illness/injury” must not be work-related, which would mean it would be covered by worker’s compensation.
