POSTURE BASICS Flashcards
This is known as?
Neutral Spine
This is known as?
Lordosis - Hyper lordotic posture is where there is an excessive lumbar curve & anterior tilt of the pelvis
This is known as
Kyphosis - excessive thoracic curve of the spine
This is known as
Flat back - little to no curve in the spine with a slight posterior tilt of the pelvis
This is known as
Sway back - the pelvis is level but the hip joint is forward of the chest with the line of gravity passing posteriorly to the greather trochanter (a bony prominence on the femur, or thigh bone, where muscles attach) - slouched posture
This is known as?
Scoliosis - postural deviation characterised by a C or S shape lateral curvature of the spine
We often refer to neutral alignment as the
plumb line
The plumb line refers to
Ear lobes
Bodies of cervical vertebrae
Shoulder joint – the tip of shoulder blades
Bodies of the lumbar vertebrae
Slightly posterior of the hip joint (through greater trochanter of the femur)
Slightly anterior of the centre of knee joint
Slightly anterior of the lateral malleolus (outside ankle bone)
What can we do to help those with postural issues?
- Regular physical activity
- special attention to strengthening the core muscles (along with neighbouring muscle groups)
- and stretching of the tight muscles can reduce muscular imbalance and general backache through poor alignment for most people.
What are office workers, long distance drivers, older and taller clients most likely to suffer with?
Kyphosis
What postural deviation are dancers, gymnasts, athletes of certain sports such as javelin & pregnant clients most likely to suffer with?
Lordosis
Boxers, those that work in flexion but not extension, and people who sit for long periods, what are they most likely to suffer with concerning posture?
flat back
What are younger, taller, or those who stand up for long periods most likely to suffer with?
Sway back
