Posterior Abdominal Viscera and Wall Flashcards
Psoas Major Insertion and Function
Insertion: Lesser trochanter of femur
Function: With iliac, flexes the thigh and trunk; laterally bends the vertebral column; and when sitting, acts with iliac to flex the trunk
Iliac Insertion and Function
Insertion: Lesser trochanter of femur
Function: With posts major, flexes the thigh and stabilizes the hip joint
Quadratus Lumborum
Extends from inferior border of 12th rib and tips of lumbar transverse processes to iliac crest
Function: Extends and laterally flexes the vertebral column
Posterior Abdominal Wall Arterial Supply
Paired Arteries:
- Inferior phrenic
- Suprarenal
- Renal
- Gonadal (ovarian or testicular)
- Lumbar
- Common Iliac
Major Tributaries of the IVC
- Right gonadal (testicular/ovarian) vein
- Right and left renal veins
- Right and left common iliac veins
- Hepatic veins
Tributaries of the Left Renal Vein
- Left gonadal (testicular/ovarian) vein
Lumbar Plexus
Composed of anterior rami of L1-L4 nerves, forms in the posterior part of posts major and provides general sensory and motor innervation to skin and muscles
Iliohypograstric and Ilio-inguinal
To abdominal muscles and skin of the pubic and inguinal regions
Lateral Cutaneous Nerve of the Thigh
To skin on the anterolateral surface of the thigh
Genitofemoral
Motor to the cremaster muscle and sensory to skin inferior and medial to inguinal ligament
Obturator
To thigh adductor muscles
Femoral
To hip flexor and knee extensor muscles
Lumbosacral Trunk
Participates in the formation of the sacral plexus with the anterior rami of S1-S4 nerves
Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
- Rupture of an aneurysm (localized enlargement) of the abdominal aorta causes severe pain in the abdomen or back, can have 90% mortality rate due to heavy blood loss if unrecognized
- Surgical repair would be to open the aneurysm, insert a prothetic graft, and sew the wall of the aneurysmal aorta over the graft to protect it
