What are the factors of modern-day amateurs of the twentieth century?
- Some high level performers were not professionals
- Performance at the top is open to all
- Tended to be of lower status

The process of attempting to gain money from an activity e.g. sport
What is sponsorship?
When a company pays for their product to be publicly displayed or advertised to attempt to increase the sales of there goods
What is merchandising?
The practice in which the brand or image from one ‘product’ is used to sell another e.g. professional sport
What are the characteristics of commercialisation on sport?

What are the effects of commercialisation on professional performers?
- Receive high incomes from commercial activities and sports participation
- Must specialise in sport in order to compete
- Successful results means pay rises
- Under pressure to perform when injured
- Controlled by the sponsor
- Suffer lack of privacy
What are the effects of commercialisation on sport?
- Rules and regulations have changed to speed up action to prevent boredom
- Breaks are provided in play so that sponsors can advertise there products and services
- Competition formats have changed(twenty20 cricket).
- The increase in technology gives the spectator a more personal experience
How did the rationalisation of association football change the game in the 19th century?
Urbanisation - large numbers of people living in one place gave a large captive audience
More free time - less time working in the factories
Improved transport - fans were able to travel
What are the reasons why companies invest large amounts of money into sport?
- Increased sales,commercial benefits,profit,publicity
- Gives an opportunity to link to corporate hospitality

The spreading of the knowledge and customs of sport around the world.
How is globalisation seen in sport?
- The sponsorships of events(coca-cola)
- The spreading of different sports to new nations e.g. 1994 World Cup was hosted in America
- The players are recruited to play for teams in other countries
What impact has social media had on sport?
- Players & fans globally communicate
- Athletes use it to share info and promote their clubs
- Companies are being set up to provide social media at a variety of levels
- Some players/coaches get into trouble for inappropriate usage
