What is anxiety?
A negative aspect of stress characterised by irrational thinking, loss of concentration and fear of failure
What are the competitive traits?
- A disposition to suffer nerves in most sporting situations (personality traits)
- Consistent
- A player worrying before all games
- Anxious behaviour all the time
What are the competitive states?
- Anxiety experienced at a specific time during a competitive situation
- Temporary rush of anxiety
- May be cognitive or somatic
- Caused by threatening circumstances
What are the two anxiety types?
Somatic and cognitive
What are the somatic anxiety responses?
- Physiological responses
- Muscular tension
- Shaking
- Pacing
- Poor co-ordination
- Sweating
- Increased heart rate
What are the cognitive anxiety types?
- Psychological responses
- Irrational thinking -nerves
- Worrying
- Confusion
- Loss of concentration

What are the common causes of anxiety?
- Being watched
- Increased competition

What are the positives and negatives of questionnaires?
(+) - Quick, cheap and easy,allows comparison
(-) - inaccurate answers, socially desirable answers, depends on mood, misinterpretation of questions, lack of understanding, biased answers
What are the positives and negatives of observation?
(+) - watching means it is true to life, based on observer’s opinion, must know the performer
(-) - time consuming, may need more than one observer, behavioural change as they are being watched
What are positives and negatives of physiological measures?
(+) - factual , allows comparisons, responses can be measured in real life
(-) - Wearing a device can restrict performance
