What is Goal Setting?
An aim or desired result
What is an outcome related goal?
A goal set against the performer - more emphasis on the result
What is a performance goal?
A goal focused on having a better performance
- you can lose the event but still get personal success maintaining motivation
What is a process goal?
A goal based on improving technique or strategy
Why do goals need to be Specific?
To match the training of the performer to the activity they will be playing to improve their performance
Why do the goals need to be measurable?
So that motivation will help the performer work towards improving their performance
Why do goals need to be achievable?
So that demotivation is not a factor which could occur
Why do the goals need to be realistic?
So that the performer is able to reach the goal they have set
Why do the goals have to be Time-bound?
To specify the period of time in which they have to complete the goal(s) set
Why do the goals need to be evaluated?
Goals should be evaluated by coaches to identify if the goal has been reached
Why must goals be re-done?
If goals have not been met they should be altered and redone to accomplish them.
What are task orientated goals?
Goals which focus on the outcome of the task E.g. winning the champions league final
What are the benefits of goal setting?
- increases motivation
- reduces social loafing
- reduces the ringelmann effect
- builds task persistence
- lowers arousal/anxiety
