-most common childhood renal didease
-injury & inflammation to the glomerular basement membrane
when does APSGN usually occur?
between the ages 4-12 years
what happens id APSGN goes untreated?
kidney failure
clinical course of APSGN
latent period of 10-14 days after sore throat
signs/symptoms of APGSN
-hypertension
-mild-moderate edema
-resp: increased WOB, crackles
-cardiac gallop
-fever headache
pale, lethargic, irritable
-V/A, abdominal pain
-dark/tea-colored urine
lab findings of APGSN
-hematuria
-proteinuria
-oliguria
-elevated urine SG
diagnosis
-throat culture (might be negative)
-ASO titers
-urinalysis
-BUN/creatinine
-serum protein levels
-increased ESR
APSGN complications
-severe hypertension
-hypertensive encephalopathy
-seizures
-cardiac decompensation from hypervolemia
-acute renal failure
APSGN treatment
-supportive
-treat symptoms (antihypertensives)
-antibiotics only is throat culture is positive
APSGN nursing management
-blood pressure
-fluid balance
-behavior
-regular diet with no added salt
-fluid restrictions
-activity restrictions if hypertensive or cardiac s/s
