What is migration within a country called?
Internal displacement.
What is migration to another country called?
International migration.
What is the word for moving out of a country?
Emigration
What do you call people moving into a country?
Immigrants.
What are illegal immigrants.
People who don’t have valid visa’s or passports (permission) to enter a country are called illegal immigrants.
What are asylum seekers?
People who do not have valid visa’s or passports and have been detained at a border to make a case for staying. Usually this happens when it is unsafe for them to return to their country.
What is migration?
Migration is the movement of people to live in a different place.
What is a push factor?
Negative factors which cause a person to want to move away from an area.
What is a pull factor?
Positives perceptions of an area (not always true) which attract someone to that area.
What is voluntary migration? Give a reason for it.
When a person make the decision to move.
Reason:
- Movement of work
- hope of better quality of life. From poorer countries to richer countries.
- joining family
- searching for higher income.
What is forced migration? Give a reason for forced migration.
Migration that is compulsory, people have little choice of moving.
Reasons:
- human wars
- natural disaster
Give an example of forced migration that is going on at the moment.
Forced migration from Syria.
Where is Syria?
Shares borders with Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon.
How did the Syrian civil war start?
2011 - peaceful protests against president Assad. Due to corruption in the government.
The government openly fired on the crowd (many young people from wealthy families were killed)
2013 - USA Got involved when the gov began using chemical weapons.
Since then many rebel groups have formed. All with different agendas. And aims. Making it really hard to make peace.
What are the impacts of migration on Syria?
6 million people internally displaced to escape the escalating violence.
- lost homes, possessions, jobs, seperate from families.
- widespread poverty.
