NOTHING Flashcards
Why is the name of the Andes highest peak?
Mount Aconcagua
How tall I mount Aconcagua?
6,962m above sea level.
What are the names of three countries which are a part of the Andes?
Chile, Equador, Argentina, Columbia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia.
What tectonic plates are the Andes found between? What type of plate boundary is it?
Nazca and South American plates.
It is a compressional plate boundary.
They move towards each other.
How do people use the Andes? SEE
Tourism -sport e.g skiing, hiking, -holiday Farming Mining HEP
What are some adaptions people have made to the Andes?
Terraces hills to grow their crops on. So their crops wouldn’t erode away.
HEP- perfect with the narrow valleys and melting glaciers.
Use of pack animals and building of paths and roads to get around
Adapted to high altitude
How did terracing solve the farming problems?
Creates flat areas to grow crops.
Land is able to retain water, no surface run off.
Limits movement of fine soil reducing erosion and of the soil and famished to the crops.
What are negatives of terrace farming.
Terraces are labour intensive to make and reduces amount of mechanisation possible in farming.
What are the problems of transport?
How have the solved the problem?
It is hard an expensive to build roads and railways. Have to cut space out of mountains. And erosion makes it dangerous.
Instead they use pack animals.
How are the Andes really useful for humans and why?
The are perfect for HEP - slopes are steep and valleys are narrow= easy to build dams. And there is a massive supply of water from glaciers and springs.
The mountains are rich in minerals = great for mining (tin, nickel, silver and gold)
Huge tourist attraction.
Where are the Andes located?
The west coast of South America.
On the plate boundary of Anzac plate and South American plate.
How long are the Andes? On average
7,000km
How wide are the Andes?
On average. 200km
Total area of the Andes is?
3,370,794 km squared
Or around 3,000,000km squared
