How did the scheme work?

A
  • given many benefits for having only one child.
  • if the second child is born. Must return benefits.
  • pay fine with money/ food rations
  • socially, ppl pushed away for disobeying a law that everyone else abides by.

Why was the one child policy introduced?

A
  • in 1980 the population was over 1 billion people.
  • government couldn’t support all of the people.
    They didn’t want to reach 8 billion by 2020.

What are some affects of the One Child Policy?

A
  • richer families disobey and pay fine.
  • farmers (need larger work force) obey but falling work no. = food shortages.
  • girls abandoned & gender selective abortion = gender misbalance
    = poor treatment of women. (Kidnapped & forced to marry)
  • huge pressure on single children to live up to parents and grand parents expectations.
    V. Spoilt children.
    = rising social cost.

  • 400 million births prevented.

- More people in work (woman) because they have children later and only need to look after one child.
