Population Growth Flashcards
How to find net population growth?
Birth+Immigration - Death+Emigration
What does exponential population growth look like?
A endless curve that goes up forever.
What does logistical population growth look like?
A curve that rises and levels out once it reaches carrying capacity.
Where is population growth the highest in logistical growth?
At roughly half of carrying capacity.
What is t?
A variable representing time.
What is N?
A variable representing population size. N is a function of t and can also be written as N(t).
What is dN/dt?
A quantity representing the population growth rate. Like N, dN/dt depends on t.
What is r?
A constant representing the maximum per capita growth rate. r depends on the rates of births and deaths in the population.
What is K?
A constant representing the carrying capacity.
What is N0?
A constant representing the initial population size.
Examples of density dependent limiting factors,
Floods, Earthquakes, Droughts
Examples of density independent limiting factors,
Disease, Food availability, Space to thrive
