RNA Flashcards
Define Transcription
The process of constructing a messenger RNA molecule using a DNA molecule as a template with resulting transfer of genetic information to the messenger RNA
Define Central Dogma
A theory stating that genetic information flows only in one direction, from DNA, to RNA, to protein, or RNA directly to protein.
What pairs with Adenine in RNA?
Uracil
What is the Enhancer?
DNA sequences that can increase the transcription of genes.
What is the Promoter?
a region of DNA upstream of a gene where relevant proteins bind to initiate transcription of that gene.
What are Exons?
A part of the gene that is used to translate sequences into amino acids.
What are Introns?
An intron is a region that resides within a gene but does not remain in the final mature mRNA molecule following transcription of that gene
What happens in Initiation?
Initiation is the beginning of transcription. It occurs when the enzyme RNA polymerase binds to a region of a gene called the promoter
What happens in Elongation?
During elongation, RNA polymerase “walks” along one strand of DNA, known as the template strand, in the 3’ to 5’ direction.
What happens in Termination
