More DNA Flashcards
Define Lagging Strand
Requires a slight delay before undergoing replication, and it must undergo replication discontinuously in small fragments.
Define Leading Strand
Continuously synthesized strand of DNA.
Define Semi-discontinuous
Synthesized in fragments as opposed to a continuous singular segment
Define Semiconservative replication
The form of replication that DNA uses by splitting itself into 2 singular strands and proceeding to add more nucleotides onto that to make 2 double helixes.
Define Okazaki fragments
Short DNA pieces as result of the lagging strand discontinuously synthesizing DNA
What is the function of Helicase?
To split and unwind the double helix of DNA.
What is the function of Primase?
To add nucleotide primers to the unwound strand.
What is the function of DNA Polymerase III?
To add the actual nucleotides to the strand.
What is the function of DNA Polymerase I?
To replace the primers with real nucleotides.
What is the function of Ligase?
To double check the work of the polymerases.
