Genes Flashcards
Define Genotype
A term that refers to the two alleles present at a specific locus in the genome
Define Homozygous
Having two identical alleles of a particular gene or genes.
Define Heterozygous
A term that describes having two different versions of the same gene
Define Phenotype
the set of observable characteristics of an individual resulting from the interaction of its genotype with the environment.
Define Genotypic ratio
A numerical comparison of how many offspring will have one genotype versus another
Define Phenotypic ratio
A numerical comparison of how many offspring will have one phenotype versus another
What is the difference between dominant and recessive traits?
Dominant traits are always expressed when the connected allele is dominant, even if only one copy of the dominant trait exists. Recessive traits are expressed only if both the connected alleles are recessive.
Define Codominance
An inheritance pattern where two alleles are expressed equally, and neither allele is dominant or recessive
If one parent is FF and another is ff, what will the children be?
All Ff
If both parents are Ff what will their children be?
1/4 FF : 1/2 Ff : 1/4 ff
