Popliteal Fossa Flashcards
Boundaries of popliteal fossa
Upper medial- semitendinosus and semimembranosus
Upper lateral- biceps femoris
Lower medial- medial head of gastrocnemius
Lower lateral- lateral head of gastrocnemius and plantaris
Contents of popliteal fossa
Popliteal artery and vein
Tibial nerve
Common peroneal nerve
Lymph nodes
Roof of popliteal fossa
Skin and fascia
Fascia contains- small saphenous vein and the terminal branch of the posterior cutaneous nerve of the thigh
Floor of popliteal fossa
Popliteal surface of femur
Capsule of the knee joint
Popliteus muscle
Origin, course, and termination of popliteal artery
Origin- continuation of femoral artery at the adductor hiatus
Course- deeper structure on popliteal surface, capsule of knee joint and popliteus
Termination- at distal border of popliteus by dividing into anterior tibial and posterior tibial arteries
Branches of popliteal artery
5 genicular arteries; superior medial and lateral, inferior middle and lateral, and middle genicular arteries
Origin, landmark branches and termination of tibial nerve
Origin-terminal branch of sciatic nerve
Landmark- most superficial structure
Termination- continues in th back of leg as tibial nerve
Branches- sural nerve(only cutaneous nerve), muscular branches(gastrocnemius, plantaris, soles, popliteus) 3 articular branches
Origin, landmark, termination and branches of common peroneal nerve
Origin- terminal branch of sciatic nerve
Landmark-runs along medial border of biceps femoris in popliteal fossa
Termination-divides to superficial and deep peroneal nerves at neck of fibula
Branches- sural communicating nerve and lateral cutaneous nerve of the calf, 3 articular branches
