Back Of Thigh Flashcards
Dermatome of back of thigh
S2
Origin of hamstrings
Ischial tuberosity
Common action of hamstrings
Knee flexion and hip extension
Common nerve supply of hamstrings
Sciatic nerve; tibial part
Innervation of short head of biceps femoris
Sciatic nerve ; common peroneal
3 muscles attached to the upper part of medial surface of tibia and their innervation
SGS- sartorius gracilis semitendinosus
Sartorius- femoral n (anterior compartment)
Gracilis- obturator n (medial)
Semitendinosus- sciatic (posterior)
Muscle that flexes hip joint and extends knee joint
Rectus femoris
Muscle that flexes both the knee and hip joint
Sartorius
Muscle that extends the hip and helps extending the knee
Gluteus Maximus
Muscle supplied by both sciatic and obturator nerves
Adductor magnus
Muscle that stabilizes pelvis during walking
Gluteus medius and minimus
Sciatic nerve root values
L4,5,S1,2,3
Landmarks/course of sciatic nerve
- Passes in greater sciatic foramen below piriformis
- Covered by gluteus Maximus and hamstrings
- Terminates into the middle of back of the thigh as tibial and common peroneal nerve
Branches of sciatic
- Muscular branches to hamstrings and ischial part of adductor magnus
- articular branches to hip and knee joint
- Two terminal branches
What is sciatica an what is it caused by?
Pain along the sensory distribution of the sciatic nerve, it is caused by herniated intervertebral disc compressing nerve roots
