lower limb venous drainage Flashcards
describe the venous drainage and state the factors that promote venous return from the lower limb, giving the clinical relevance of this.
1
Q
State the 3 types of veins giving examples
A
- Superficial veins- run in deep fascia : great saphenous and small saphenous
- Deep veins- run with muscles : femoral, popliteal and tibial veins
- Communicating veins- connect deep and superficial veins
2
Q
Discuss the superficial veins
A
Origin: great saphenous arises from the medial end and small saphenous arises from lateral end of dorsal venous arch.
Termination: great saphenous terminates in femoral vein and small saphenous, popliteal vein.
Relations: great= in front of medial malleolus and accompanied by saphenous nerve, small= behind lateral malleolus and accompanied by sural nerve
3
Q
Clinical importance of veins
A
- Veins contain valves to prevent back flow of blood
- Varicose veins- dilated, elongated, tortuous saphenous veins. Due to weakness in the vein walls, damage of the valves or obstruction of the deep veins by thrombosis.
- Vein graft in coronary bypass surgery
