Q

What is addition polymerisation?

A
  • pi bonds break in lots of small alkene monomers
  • monomers join together
  • form long polymers chain

Q

What are problems with polymers and why?

A

Go to landfill = non-biodegradable
Incinerated = produces toxic gases like CO (dioxins)
PVC Problems = produces acidic HCl gases

Q

What are the solutions to polymers?

A

Biodegradable alternatives: made from starch/maize/cellulose/lactic acid
Photodegradable alternatives: C=O degraded by UV light
Recycling: sorted into types, melted and remoulded
Incinerated with gas scrubber: removes poisonous gases
Cracking: creates short chained alkanes - used as fuels
Feedstocks recycling: broken down into H2 and CO - reacted with hydrocarbons - make useful compounds
