phenol Flashcards
What is phenol?
functional group, benzene with OH
what are the qualities of phenol?
solid at room temperature
very weak acid
what is the test for phenol?
bromine foes orange to colourless but a white ppt is formed
what is the answer template for phenol?
more reactive than benzene, oxygen lone pair donates into the delocalsied ring of pi electron, increases electron density, easier to polarise the electrophile
What is the pi bonding and reaction conditions table to phenol, benzene and alkenes?
phenol - O lone pair donates to pi e- ring, high e density, easily polarises electrophile, reacts instantaneously
benzene - delocalised pi e ring, low e density, cant polarise, need halogen carrier catalyst
alkenes - localised pi bond, high e density, easily polarises electrophile, reacts instantaneously
What does phenol do with a strong base?
neutralises
OH + NaOH –> O-+Na + H2O
Does phenol react with weak bases?
no
Does phenol react with weak bases?
no
