Alcohols Flashcards
What are some uses of alcohols?
Fuels, drinks, solvents
What is the alcohol functional group?
-OH
What is bioethanol used for?
grow maize, extract glucose, ferment into ethanol, (CO2 neutral)
Why is antifreeze more soluble in water?
Because it has double the amount of hydrogen bonds
What is needed for dehydration of alcohols?
H3PO4, H2SO4
Reflux
What happens in the oxidation of alcohols?
Distillation: aldehyde/ketone + water
Reflux: Carboxylic acid + water
What is the oxidising reagent for alcohols and the observations expected?
Reagent: acidified dichromate solution H+/Cr2O72- (aq)
Observation: orange –> green
What are the stages for making alcohols into haloalkanes?
Stage 1: making HX
e.g. NaX + H2SO4 –> HX + NaHSO4
Stage 2: nucleophilic substitution mechanism
e.g. alcohol + HX –> Haloalkane + H2O
