Pneumonia Flashcards
pneumonia
Pneumonia is an air space disease and
consolidation
It is also described as an inflammation of lung
parenchyma
Lung air space can be filled with pus, microorganisms, fluid, cancer cells, proteins and blood
from pulmonary haemorrhage
Does not cause volume loss-no lung collapse
Pleural effusion and lymphnode enlargement are
rare
TYPES PNEUMONIA
Lobar : concentrates in one lobe, lobe
consolidation, air bronchograms
Broncho pneumonia: affects bilateral lobes
Interstitial: no air bronchograms, perihilar
Aspiration : alcohol, post anaesthesia etc
Diffuse pulmonary infections :PCP, Ventilated
patients etc
clinical manifestations of PNA
Depends on the cause
Cough
Chest pains
fever
COMMON PNEUMONIA PATTERNS ON
CHEST X RAY
Consolidations
Interstitial shadowing
Cavitations
Pleural effusions…rare(complicated pneumonia)
Diffuse lung shadowing
cavitation
AIR BRONCHOGRAM IN PNEUMONIA
Dense lung
Prominent air vessels
with honey comb
patterns
Trachea and brochi
are visible up to the
peripheral
Dyspnoea
Diffuse bilateral fluffy
lung shadowing
Clear costophrenic
angles
No pleural effusions
CTR<50%
Bilateral interstitial
lung shadowing
Dense lung fields
PNEUMOCYST CARINI PNEUMONIA (PCP)
MANIFESTATION
Chest pains
Dry cough
Bilateral interstitial
shadowing from the
bronchi
Air broncho grams
noted
PCP..interstitial
disease
ADULT RESPIRATORY DISTRESS
SYNDROME
Manifestation
Damage to pulmonary
capillary endothelium
Leakages occurs
Multiple diffuse
opacities in the lungs
Pcp are among the
causative agents
