Bone Tumors Flashcards
Categories of bone tumors
- Osteolytic;
they result in bone density and have a lucent radiographic appearance. - Osteoblastic;
They result in increase in bone density and have opaque radiographic appearance.
Increase calcium deposits
Enchondroma
Cartilaginous, benign bone lesion found in the bone marrow.
Mostly in young adults.
Enchondroma radiographic appearance
Cystic appearance with calcium deposits.
Osteochondroma
Consists of benign projection of bone that has a cartilaginous cap.
Found in the metaphysis of long bones, ribs and the pelvis
Osteochondroma radiographic appearance
Mushroom or cauliflower radiographic appearance
Multiple myeloma
Primary malignant bone tumor characterized by an increase in plasma cells found within RBC producing bones.
Sings of multiple myeloma
1.Possess punched out osteolytic lesions.
2. Bence-jones proteins found in urine
3. Possess marked osteoporosis with compression fractures of the vertebrae bodies.
Treating multiple myeloma
Chemotherapy, stem cell treatment and steroids
Osteosarcoma
Osteoblastic lesion that may extend to the surrounding soft tissue structures.
Second most common type of malignant tumor.
Osteosarcoma metastasis
Metastisize to the lungs
Poor prognosis
Chondrosarcoma
expansile osteolytic primary bone tumor.
Represent 10% of all malignant skeletal tumors
Fibrosarcoma
Malignant tumor of the skeletal system that often has a moth-eaten radiographic appearance.
Knee and pelvis
Secondary bone cancer
Cancers originating from the prostate gland, breast, thyroid glands, colon, and kidneys often metastasize to the skeletal system.( Long bones, ribs, and spine)
