Pneumoconioses Flashcards
Pneumoconioses:
Types
Anthracosis, silicosis, asbetosis
Pneumoconioses:
Increased risk for
cor pulmonale
Caplan’s syndrome
Pneumoconioses:
Anthracosis
Associated with coal mine (coal miner’s lung)
Affects upper lobe
Pneumoconioses:
Silicosis
Associated with foundries, sandblasting and mines
MP respond to silica and release fibrogenic factor.
Pneumoconioses:
Silicosis, increased risk for
1) Silica may disrupt phagolysosomes and impair MP,
thus increasing susceptibility to TB
2) Also increased risk for bronchogenic carcinoma
Pneumoconioses:
Silicosis, finding
Affects upper lobe
Eggshell calcification of hilar LNs
Pneumoconioses:
Asbestosis
Associated with shipbuilding, roofing and plumbing
Associated with increased with incidence of bronchogenic carcinoma and mesothelioma
Pneumoconioses:
Asbestosis finding
1) Affects LOWER lobe (vs. anthracosis, silicosis)
2) Ivory white calcified pleural plaques pathognomic of asbestos exposure (but are not precancerous)
3) Golden brown fusiform rods resembling dumbbells.
Caplan’s syndrome
Combination of RA and pneumoconiosis,
which manifests as intrapulmonary nodules,
which appear homogenous and well-defined on Xray
