Neonatal respiratory distress syndrome Flashcards
Neonetal respiratory distress syndrome:
Surfactant deficiency leading to high surface tension, resulting in alveolar collapse.
Neonetal respiratory distress syndrome:
diagnosis
Lecithin: sphingomyelin ratio < 1.5 in amniotic fluid
Neonetal respiratory distress syndrome
complication
Persistently low O2 tension -> risk of PDA
Therapeutic supplemental O2 can result in retinopathy of prematurity and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.
Neonetal respiratory distress syndrome
Risk factors
Prematurity, maternal diabetes (elevated fetal insulin), C section (low release of fetal glucocorticoid)
Neonetal respiratory distress syndrome
Treatment
Maternal steroid before birth,
Artificial surfactant for infant
