Plyometric Training Flashcards
Plyometrics enable a muscle to
Reach maximal force in the shortest possible time
Power is a ___-_____ relationship
Force-speed
Rapid stretch increases
Elastic energy in musculotendinous components
Tendons constitute majority of the
Series elastic component
Mechanical model steps (5)
Eccentric action , SEC acts as spring and lengthened, elastic energy is stored, immediate concentric action, stored energy released
Neurophysiological model
Potentiation of concentric action by use of stretch reflex. Muscle spindle activity
Three phases of stretch shortening cycle
Eccentric, amortization, concentric
Plyometric program design
Mode, intensity, frequency, recovery, volume, length, progression, warm up
Safety considerations
Proper landing technique, center of gravity in line with base of support, shoulders over knees during landing
Determine plyo ability through strength
Lower body.. Squat 1 RM should be at least 1.5 times body weight
Upper body.. Bench 1 RM should b a least their body weight and 5 clap pushups in a row
Speed for plyo
5 reps of squat with 60% body weight in 5 seconds
Balance
Test for 30 seconds
Physical characteristics
Weighing more than 220 pounds may cause injury
Landing surface
Shock absorbing: grass, suspended floor, rubber mat
Equipment
Sturdy boxes with non-slip top
6-42 inches in height
18x24 inches of landing space
