Definition of pleural effusion?
Collection of fluid in pleural cavity, it can be exudative ( increase protein) or transudative (decrease protein)
Exudative causes of pleural effusion?
Related to inflammation
Lung cancer
Pneumonia
Rhematoid arthritis
Tuberculosis
Transudative causes of pleural effusion?
Congestive cardiac fluid
Hypoalbuminaemia
Hypothyroidism
Meigs syndrome
Presentation of pleural effusion?
Shortness of breath
Dullness to percussion over effusion
reduced breath sounds
Tracheal deviation away from effusion.
Investigations of pleural effusion?
Chest xray will show:
- Blunting of catastrophic angle
- Fluid in lung fissures
- Large effusion will have meniscus
- Tracheal and mediastinal deviation
