Plasma Membranes Flashcards
Fluid mosaic model name meaning
Describes the structure of the plasma membrane in which phospholipids and unanchored proteins are free moving (fluidity) and anchored proteins are spread throughout (mosaic).
Simple diffusion
Passive movement of small hydrophilic and hydrophobic molecules from a higher concentration to a lower concentration directly through the plasma membrane.
Facilitated Diffusion
Hydrophilic molecules passively move down the concentration gradient across the plasma membrane by carrier proteins or protein channels.
Osmosis
Diffusion of free water molecules through a semi-permeable membrane from a region of higher concentration of water to a region of a lower concentration of water.
Exocytosis
Movement of materials out of a cell with the use of a vesicle. The vesicle fuses with the plasma membrane, and the contents of the vesicle are released out of the cell.
Ribosomes
A organelle made of RNA and protein that is the site of translation in protein synthesis.
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum
Site of protein synthesis and modification.
Golgi apparatus
Organelle in which proteins are assembled and then packaged in vesicles ready for exocytosis.
Protein synthesis
The production of a protein through the processes of gene expression.
Endocytosis
The process in which a cell consumes a particle or a substance by engulfing it and then forming a vesicle with the plasma membrane, bringing it into the cell.
