Gene Structure And Regulation Flashcards
Structural genes
Gene that codes for proteins and rna molecules that aren’t involved in gene regulation.
Regulatory gene
A gene that codes for transcription factors.
Transcription factors
Proteins that control gene expression by binding to DNA sequences close to the promoter region of a gene/ rna polymerase to induce or repress the expression of specific genes.
promoter
upstream region of a gene to which rna polymerase attaches, initiating transcription.

Why is the genetic code degenerate?
Because more than one codon can code for the same amino acid.
Lac operon
Contains the genes that code for three proteins involved in the metabolism of lactose in e.coli and a few other bacteria. It is an inducible operon and its genes are transcribed only when lactose is available.
