Photosynthesis Flashcards
Purpose of photosynthesis
Purpose is to make glucose. Glucose can be used for an immediate source of energy, stored by the plant as starch for later conversion, used as a. Chemical starting point for the synthesis of complex compounds.
The origin of chloroplast
theory of endosymbiosis. Chloroplasts are descendants of Cyanobacteria (photosynthetic bacteria), that were engulfed by eukaryotic cells in ancient times and lived in a symbiotic relationship and progressively changed into chloroplast into the form as we see today.
Evidence of endosymbiosis
Chloroplast have:
- own circular DNA
- ribosomes
- porins
- Double membrane
Light dependent stage
Occurs in the grana. Light energy is trapped by chlorophyll, water is spilt and oxygen is produced as a waste product.
Calvin cycle
Occurs in the stroma. Carbon dioxide is reduced to form glucose.
Light dependent inputs and outputs
Inputs: nadp+, adp+Pi, water, light energy, chhlorophyll
Outputs: nadph, atp, oxygen gas
Light independent inputs and outputs
Inputs: carbon dioxide, nadph, atp
Outputs: glucose, adp + Pi, nadp+
Factors affecting rate of photosynthesis
Light intensity, carbon dioxide, temperature
