Plant tissue Flashcards
Tissue that makes up the outer layers of the plant; contains the epidermis, and in woody plants, the periderm
Dermal tissue
A layer of dermal tissue found only in woody plants that contains the cork cambium and the bark
Periderm
The outermost layer of tissue in non-woody portions of the plant
Epidermis
Hair-like outgrowth on some cells of the epidermis that helps minimize water loss
Trichome
A waxy coating on some cells in the epidermis that minimizes water loss
Cuticle
A type of cell in the epidermis that opens and closes the stomata
Guard cell
Tissue that contains continuous masses of parenchyma, collenchyma, and schlerenchyma cells
Ground tissue
A type of cell that has thick, flexible walls and that supports young, growing organs in the plant
Collenchyma cell
A type of cell that has thick, inflexible walls and that gives strength and support to parts of the plant that are no longer elongating
Sclerenchyma cell
A type of cell that is meristematic, thin-walled, and involved in storage, wound healing, regeneration, and photosynthesis in the plant
Parenchyma cell
Tissue that transports various substances within the plant including water, nutrients, photosynthates, and hormones
Vascular tissue
Vascular tissue through which the food of the plant is conducted
Phloem
Vascular tissue that is meristematic and produces xylem and phloem
Vascular cambium
Vascular tissue through which water and minerals are conducted
Xylem
Tissue that is no longer actively growing and has cells that have already differentiated into specific types
Permanent tissue
