Plant Organs and Parts of Organs Flashcards
Plant organ that absorbs water and nutrients, stabilizes the plant, synthesizes plant hormones, and stores energy produced by the plant
Root
Plant organ that supports fruits, flowers, and leaves, determines leaf arrangement, contains vascular tissue, and stores energy for plant growth
Stem
Bud located at the tip of a stem or branch
Terminal bud
A bud located between the leaf and the stem; also called a lateral bud
Axillary bud
The region of a stem between two successive nodes
Internode
The part of a stem where one or more leaves (or buds) are attached
Node
An arrangement in which there are two buds or leaves per node
Opposite
An arrangement in which there is only one bud or leaf per node
Alternate
An arrangement in which there are three or more buds or leaves per node; also called verticillate
Whorled
Plant organ that photosynthesizes, transports sugars from source to sink, and synthesizes plant hormones
Leaf
A leaf in which the blade is continuous and undivided
Simple leaf
A leaf in which the blade is divided into multiple distinct segments
Compound leaf
One of the distinct sections of the blade in a compound leaf
Leaflet
A type of compound leaf that has leaflets that are all attached at the same point at the end of the petiole
Palmately compound
A type of compound leaf that has leaflets that are attached at different points along the petiole and are arranged opposite each other
Pinnately compound
Stalk of a leaf
Petiole
The broad, expanded portion of a leaf
Blade
Openings in the surface of the leaf that facilitate gas exchange in the plant
Stomata
Major reproductive organ of an angiosperm
Flower
Floral organ located the next whorl in from the sepals that usually provides the flower with color and attracts pollinators
Petal
Floral organ located in the outermost whorl of the flower which is often green but can also have color and look similar to a petal; helps protect the developing flower bud before opening
Sepal
Female reproductive organ located in the innermost whorl of the flower; also known as the carpel
Pistil
Stalk of the pistil
Style
Swollen area at the base of the pistil that eventually becomes a fruit
Ovary
Sticky tip of the pistil that receives pollen
Stigma
Male reproductive part of the flower located the next whorl in from the petals
Stamen
The expanded, apical, pollen-bearing portion of the stamen
Anther
Stalk of the stamen
