plant nutrition Flashcards
photosynthesis meaning
the process by which plants produce carbohydrates from carbon dioxide and water using energy from light
chlorophyll
green pigment present in the chloroplasts of plant cells
uses and storage of carbohydrates
as an energy source: broken down into energy by respiration
storage: glucose is converted into sucrose and then transported in the phloem to different parts of the plant. Returning back to glucose when needed
Structural support: some of the glucose is converted to cellulose, which is an important component in the plant’s cell walls
chemical equation for photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H2O —(light +chlorophyll) —> C6H12O6 +6O2
limiting factors for photosynthesis
CO2 conc., light intensity and temperature
