Plant Hormones 2 Flashcards

1
Q

How is weed B Gon used?

A

It may be used by people with lawns who want their grass but not the weeds. It can also be used by farmers who grow primarily monocots.

2
Q

What type of plants does Weed B Gon target, and what types does ti allow to grow?

A

They target broadleaf weeds, which are eudicots. It should be less effective towards monocots, and allow them to grow.

Q

How does the Weed B Gon ingredients affect unwanted plants?

A

Mimics auxins and causes the weeds and unwanted plants to grow too quickly and die

Q

How does the Weed B gon affect other plants users do want to grow?

A

It should not affect it, and may actually promote the growth of non-broadleaf plants

6
Q

What plant hormones does Weed B Gon affect? Why?

A

they mimic or are analogous to auxins

they stimulate growth and become toxic in high concentrations

7
Q

How does Weed B gon affect planted seeds?

A

Weed B Gon may inhibit the growth of the cowpeas compared to the corn, as auxins are more toxic to eudicots compared to monocots

Q

How is atrazine used? Who might use it, and in what setting?

A

Atrazine is used to control broadleaf and grassy weeds. The product is used in maintaining the growth of crops such as corn and sugarcane, and can be used on lawns.

16
Q

What is a null hypothesis for your experiment?

A

There will be no difference in the effect of either herbicide on both cowpeas and corn

17
Q

What is you alternative hypothesis, and why?

A

Atrazine will promote early germination and early plant growth in corn, whilst Weed B Gon will result in a slower germination and plant growth rate for both cowpeas and corn.

Atrazine influences gibberellins and cytokinins, which are plant hormones active during germination and early plant growth. Weed B Gon on the other hand only contains auxins, which are plant hormones that stimulate growth after germination. Corn will benefit from the herbicides since it is a monocot, and will not be affected by high concentrations of auxins compared to cowpeas which are eudicot.

18
Q

What is the outcome variable?

A

Germination and plant growth

19
Q

What is the predictor variable?

A

Herbicides used: Atrazine and Weed B Gon, and concentration

20
Q

What is the relationship between outcome and predictor variable?

A

Herbicides possess plant hormones that will influence germination and plant growth.

21
Q

What does it mean if you reject the null hypothesis, and accept the alternative hypothesis?

A

It means the outcomes favor the alternative hypothesis, and suggests that there is an effect of the variable within a sample.

22
Q

What does it mean if you accept the null hypothesis, and reject the alternative hypothesis?

A

This means the experiment did not provide enough evidence to verify whether an effect exists, or there is no effect existing within the experiment
