Plant Hormones Flashcards
What is metabolism?
all chemical reactions that occur inside an organism
What is the purpose of the plant hormone experiment?
demonstrate how plant hormones, at a variety of concentrations, regulate the growth and the development of plant
What does metabolic reactions determine?
plant growth, which are regulated by plant hormones\
what are signal molecules?
plant hormones that change metabolic reactions
How are hormones transported locally?
through the cytoplasm
how are hormones transported in long distances?
vascular tissue
phloem- leaves to flowers
xylem- roots to leaves
What do hormones target?
particular cells
What are the five general classes of plant hormones?
auxins
cytokinins
gibberellins
ethylene
abscisic acid
What do auxins do? (4)
cell growth and cell expansion
increases plasticity of the cell wall and promotes growth of plant tissue
promote root initiation after transplantation
stimulates development of xylem
What do high concentration of auxins lead to? (2)
inhibition of root growth and plant elongation
toxic to eudicots, less so for monocots
What do cytokinins do? (5)
promote cell division
ensures roots and shoots grow at equal rates
promote thickening and rate of branch growth
delay aging
repair wounded plants with auxins
Where are cytokinins found?
youngest parts of pants like seeds, fruits, and new leaves
What is the most abundant plant hormone?
gibberellin
What does gibberelin do? (4)`
helps elongate young stems
promote germination
leaf development
stimulate cell division
What does ehtylene do?
affects ripening and rotting
