Plant Chemistry Flashcards
What is the function of plant metabolism?
To convert inorganic molecules to organic molecules
What is primary metabolism?
Primary metabolites that’s role is plant growth and development
What is secondary metabolism?
Evolutionary adaptation for survival
Roughly 100k different ones discovered
What are the 3 P’s of evolution?
- Protection
- Production
- Propagation
What are some evolutionary adaptations for protection?
Waxes
Pigment
Chemical defenses
What do waxes do for protection?
Found on surface of leaves (cuticles). Used to repel water and reflect light to decrease UV radiation, and protection from insects
What does pigment do for protection?
Anthocyanins (reds) allow photosynthesis in low angle autumn sunlight
What do chemical defenses do for protection?
Produces chemicals that are bitter or spicy to deter insects/animals from eating them. Can also produce insecticides.
What are some evolutionary adaptations for production?
Lignin
Mucigel
What does lignen do for production?
In secondary cell wall to provide very strong structure and rigidity. Cannot be digested.
What does mucigel do for production?
Found on root cap and keep root tip hydrated and lubricated. Creates an area around root tip that benefits healthy fungi and soil
What are some evolutionary adaptations for propagation?
Pollinator attraction
Seed germination
What does pollination attraction do for propagation?
Uses sweet tasting substances, heat, attractive smells, or other specific attractants to bring in pollinators
What does seed germination do for propagation?
Seed coats contain desiccation, deterrents, and barriers to protect against pathogens
