Angiosperms Flashcards
What is an angiosperm?
A flowering plant.
What is the role of the shoot system?
To perform photosynthesis, reproduction, and to grow up
What is the role of the root system?
Anchorage, nutrient absorption, and to grow down
What is a node?
It is where the leaves attach to the stem
What is an internode?
It is the stem that is between nodes
What is the axillary bud?
It is found at a node and creates new shoots that branch off
What is the petiole?
The stalk that connects the leaf blade to the stem
What is the leaf blade?
The leafy flat part
What are trichomes?
The hairs on a leaf
What differentiates a simple leaf from a compound leaf?
A compound leaf can have multiple blades but those blades do not have an axillary bud. It will only have an axillary bud where the leaf connects to the stem.
What are the four whorls?
- Sepal
- Petal
- Stamen
- Carpels & ovules
What is a sepal?
A modified leaf that surrounds the petals of the flower. Often green.
Plural: calyx
What is the purpose of the sepals?
Protection and can also photosynthesize
What is a petal?
A modified leaf that is often colorful and surrounds the reproductive parts.
Plural: corolla
What is the purpose of petals?
To attract pollinators
What is a stamen?
It is the male part of a flower that contains the anther and the filaments.
Plural: androecium
What is an anther?
It is where pollen is produced
What is a filament?
A stalk that supports the anther
What is a carpel?
It is the female reproductive parts that contain the style, stigma, and ovules.
Plural: gynoecium
What is the style?
It is a long tube that connects the stigma and the ovary.
What is the stigma?
On the end of the style, it is a sticky/waxy part that collects pollen
What is an ovule?
Contain the egg cells
What is a hypogynous ovary?
An ovary that sits above where the sepals, petals, and stamens are attached.
A superior ovary.
What is a perigynous ovary?
The ovary is located at the same level the sepals, petals, and stamens are attached.
