Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are the two main steps of photosynthesis?
Light reactions and the Calvin cycle
Explain photosystems I and II
Light excites antennas in photosystem II, e- is transported through cytochrome complex to photosystem I, light is captured and excites antennas in photosystem I transporting e- to NADP+ to make NADPH which is transfered to the Calvin cycle
Where do light reactions happen during photosynthesis?
Along the thylakoid membrane and in the thylakoids space
What are the phases of the Calvin cycle?
CO2 enters cycle by rubisco
Carbon fixation
Reduction
Regeneration of CO2 acceptor
Repeats to produce glucose
What is the most common form of photosynthesis?
C3
What is C4 photosynthesis?
Occurs in plants that have kranz leaf anatomy to create a higher CO2 environment.
Increases photosynthesis and decreases photorespiration
What is CAM photosynthesis?
Stomata open at night to take in CO2 and store it as an organic acid then use it for the Calvin cycle during the day when stomata are closed to conserve water
What enzyme converts inorganic carbon into organic carbon?
Rubisco
