Pions, Viruses and Bacteria Flashcards
1
Q
Pathology
A
the study of disease processes at the cellular, tissue and organ levles
2
Q
adverse effects
A
- unwanted or harmful outcomes that can occur during/after a massage
- physical discomfort, pain, bruising, emotional distress
3
Q
evidence-informed practices
A
using the best available evidence in combination with clinicians clinical expertise and the clients preferences and values to make informed decisions about delivery of healthcare services
4
Q
infectious agents
A
- microorganisms that cause infectious diseases in humans
- include viruses, bacteria, fungi, protozoa and parasites
- can be transmitted through contact w bodily fluids, inhalation of droplets and ingestion of contaminated food/water
5
Q
viruses
A
- smallest infectious agents
- composed of genetic material surrounded by a protein coat
- responsible for illnesses like common cold, flu and HIV
- cannot reproduce on their own, require host cell to reproduce
- once inside host cell, viruses hijack the cells machinery to produce more virus particles (leads to spread of infection)
- through diff modes of transmission: contact w bodily fluids, inhalations of droplets, and indirect contact w contaminated surfaces
- massage therapy can help improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, aiding bodys natural healing process
6
Q
bacteria
A
- single-celled microorganisms that live in variety of environments and can cause diseases such as strep throat, tuberculosis and food poisoning
- 3 types of bacteria: cocci (spherical– strep throat and pneumonia), bacilli (rod-shaped– tuberculosis and botulism, syphilis and lyme disease), spirilla (spiral shaped)
- massage can help improve circulation and lymphatic drainage, aid bodys natural healing
7
Q
fungi
A
- multicellular organisms that can cause infections such as ringworm and yeast infections
8
Q
protozoa
A
- single-celled organisms that can cause diseases such as malaria and amoebic dysentery
9
Q
parasites
A
- organisms that can cause diseases such as tapeworms and lcie infestations
10
Q
prions
A
- unique infectious agents that are composed of misfolded proteins
- do not contain genetic material and are not susceptible to antibiotics or antiviral drugs (unlike other viruses and bacteria)
- responsible for rare neurodegenerative diseases in humans and animals (creutzfeldt-jakob disease and mad cow disease)
- highly resistant to standard sterilization methods and can survive for extended periods in the environment
- can be transmitted through contaminated surgical instruments, blood transfusions and consumption of contaminated meat
- when in body, prions cause a conformational change in normal proteins (misfolding and accumulation in the brain)
- process can take years
- no cure for prion diseases and treatment is mainly supportive
- only prevention measures: avoid eating and consuming contaminated meat
