what is regional/partial contraindications?
dont massage only local part of body but other parts is fine
- contagious conditions
- open wounds
- acute neuitis or arthritis
what is conditional contraindications?
require masseuse to adjust massage and take adaptive measures
when do you identify contraindications?
during consult
what are some common massage contraindications? (8)
- acute injuries or inflammation
- fever (increases body temp)
- infectious diseases
- recent surgeries
- pregnancy
- skin conditions
- cardiovascular conditions
- cancer
why can you not massage when there is inflammation?
- it will increase inflammation and delay healing
- could cause microtrauma to tissues
what can cause inflammation?
- tissue damage (releases chemicals that cause blood vessels to dilate)
- bacterial infestation (body senses bacteria and sends white blood cells to attack)
- osteoporosis (weak and brittle bones)
- varicose veins (swollen and twisted veins. valves malfunction and cause blood to pool. caused by long time standing or sitting, obesity, pregnancy age or genetics)
- phlebitis (vein becomes inflamed caused by injury, infection or blood clotting)
post surgical inflammation
normal and expected, essential for healing
Aneurosa
patient with an aneurysm (blood vessel in body weakens and bulges)
- caused by smoking, high blood pressure and family history
- symptoms: pain, weakness, numbness or pulsating
Hematoma (bruises)
- blood accumulates in tissue outside of blood vessel
- symptoms: swelling, pain, discoloration
Edema
- excess fluid accumulates in tissues of the body
- caused by heart failure, kidney or liver disease, pregnancy, medication, prolonged periods of inactivity
Lymphedema
- lymphatic system can’t properly drain lymph fluid
- caused by damage or removal of lymph nodes
- treatment: MLD manual lymphatic drainage
why should you not massage cancer patients
can spread cancerous cells throughout body
- could cause injury or infection bc of weak immune system
