pilot study
what- a small scale version of an investigation that takes place before the real investigation is conducted
aim- to check that procedures, materials, measuring, scales, etc. work and to allow the researcher to make changes/modifications if necessary
single-blind procedure
what- the participants are not told the aim or other details of the study
aim- to control for the confounding effects of demand characteristics
double-blind procedure
what- participants and conducting researcher not told the aim or other details of the study
aim- to control for the confounding effects of demand characteristics and experimenter bias
control group
used with the purpose of comparison to the experimental group
