What was Piliavins procedure?
- Pilaivins standardized the behavior’s of the confederate before the study began.
2.In groups of 4(two male confederates, two female observers), one male would act either drunk or ill and the other male would be the helper.
3.The females would sit on the adjacent of the critical area and the victim would fall on the floor and stay there until help came.
4.If no one helped then the model would intervene
5.The ill person would hold a cane and the drunk person hold a paper bag with a bottle inside.
6.They would get off train and start again.
What was the 2 quantitative findings?
1.Helping rate for the ill was 100% and 81% after the confederate helped.
2.Before the model helped, 95% helped the ill and only 50% helped the drunk.
What were the 3 qualitative findings?
1.More same race help
2.More males helped than females
3.Many females recorded saying its no there job it was a mans and they weren’t strong enough.
What were the conclusions from Piliavins study?
1.Suggested there is no escape to a social situation and the victim who needs help is in front of you, the diffusion of responsibility is much less likely, regardless of how many people area round.
2.More people are likely to help a ill person than a drunk person as being drunk is seen as self-induced in a social context
